Government to Launch 2 Ro-Ro Ferries on Betim-Panaji Route
The Goa state government is set to introduce two Roll-on Roll-off (Ro-Ro) ferryboats on the Betim–Panaji route. River Navigation Director Vikramsinh Raje Bhosale announced that preliminary discussions have taken place, and budgetary provisions will be made for this initiative. Further details on the implementation timeline are expected as plans progress.

In a significant development aimed at enhancing connectivity in Goa, the state government has announced plans to introduce two Roll-on Roll-off (Ro-Ro) ferryboats on the Betim-Panaji route. This initiative, which is expected to ease traffic congestion and provide a more efficient mode of transportation, was confirmed by River Navigation Director Vikramsinh Raje Bhosale during a recent briefing.
The Betim-Panaji route is a vital artery for daily commuters and tourists alike, connecting the bustling town of Betim with the state capital, Panaji. As the region experiences increasing vehicular traffic, the introduction of Ro-Ro ferries could prove to be a timely solution. These ferries allow vehicles to drive on and off, offering a quick and convenient crossing over the Mandovi River, thus reducing travel time.
Bhosale elaborated on the project during the announcement, stating, “We are committed to improving transportation options in Goa. The Ro-Ro ferries will not only facilitate smoother transit but will also promote eco-friendly travel.” The proposed ferries are expected to operate alongside existing ferry services, providing a modern alternative for both local residents and tourists seeking a scenic route to explore the state.
While preliminary discussions have already taken place, the government is ensuring that budgetary provisions will be made to support this initiative. Officials are currently evaluating the design and specifications of the ferries to suit the requirements of the Betim-Panaji route. The state administration has expressed its intent to adhere to sustainable practices while implementing this project, which aligns with the broader vision of enhancing Goa’s transportation network.
Local businesses and residents have largely welcomed the proposal. Aneesh D’Souza, an owner of a waterfront restaurant in Panaji, remarked, “This could be a game-changer for us. If the ferries come into operation, it will attract more visitors and make it easier for locals to commute across the river.” D’Souza’s enthusiasm reflects the sentiments of many who see the potential economic benefits stemming from improved accessibility.
Despite the optimism surrounding the project, specific timelines for the implementation of the ferries remain undisclosed. Authorities have assured the public that more information will be shared as planning progresses. Stakeholders are keenly awaiting the government’s next steps, which will include a thorough analysis of cost, feasibility, and projected ridership before moving forward with construction.
The introduction of Ro-Ro ferries on the Betim-Panaji route signifies an important leap toward modernizing Goa’s transport infrastructure. As the state prepares for the eventual rollout, residents and businesses alike are hoping for swift execution of this initiative that promises to enhance the ease of travel in this picturesque region.
